I first met Dave 16 years ago when we both turned up as candidates for jobs in the same school. Initially we eyed each other with apprehension, but when it became clear we were not competing for the same post, a rapport started to develop, and that rapport continued for the following 10 years as we worked alongside each other.
As a colleague, Dave was a rock. Calm, unflappable, supportive, incredibly knowledgeable, and a wise decision maker, he led the curriculum side of the school during a very successful phase of its history, and guided us through Science College status, which set the school on the path it is on today. He was the backbone of the school.
We both retired at around the same time, and as a friend he was equally rock-like. Always welcoming, never demanding, loyal, great company he loved to relax and enjoy a good story. On his day he was a magnificent striker of a golf ball, but I know he would not mind me saying that, in common with the rest of us, he was not always on his day. One of his favourite sayings when asked how he had played after an indifferent round was “ A couple of 8’s……… the rest were rubbish!.”
He never ceased to amaze me with his knowledge in a wide field of subjects. Cars, music, sport, DIY, animals, anything scientific or technical, he always seemed to know everything about them. He was a master of the detailed explanation!
He was a devoted family man who adored his wife and daughters. Their well- being came above everything else in his life.
Dave, I cannot tell you how sad I am at your passing. You will be missed by so many, but thanks for the good times and the memories.

I was fortunate enough to work with Dave for 10 years. I learned so much from him. He was wise, kind, patient and a constant source of support. We laughed so much. What an incredible privilege to go to work every day and have so much fun. The legend lives on. Timetables across Surrey schools are constructed Dave’s way and the lives of students and teachers are better for it. I miss Dave terribly but I am proud and grateful that he was my friend.

Dave was a true and dedicated friend to me and so many others.
First impressions still linger on.
I first met David Thomas Evans in Stoneycroft, our residence at Matlock College. A true Welshman I thought even though he turned out to be English! I knew he played badminton because there were five racquets in his sports bag. I told him I was champion of my school, Abertillery Grammar, and challenged him to a game. He obliged, beating me 15-0 and revealed he had played for Cheshire!
He was mature, private and had a wicked sense of humour. He gave good advice to friends. He was truly an inspiration and will be sadly missed.
Until we meet again, Evo
